sunscreen and retinoids sunscreen and retinoids Sunscreen and a retinoid. We’ll be the first to admit we like experimenting with our routines. It’s fun to try all the shiny, new, “this will change your skin for sure!” ingredients out there, but we always come back to two products: sunscreen and a retinoid. Dermatologists swear by them, and there’s a ton of scientific studies out there about how they actually make a difference in your skin over the long haul. Presented By “Good health is not something we can buy. However, it can be an extremely valuable savings account.” - Anne Wilson Schaef The Daily Tonic is a two to five minute read sharing science backed health news and tips, all while getting you to crack a smile or even lol on occasion. Thursday. So here is a frustrating headline from the Washington Post: “Healthy lifestyle may increase life expectancy, research suggests.” Shocker—did we really need research to suggest the obvious? Are we getting that low on newsworthy stories? Anyway, here is something that might not seem quite as obvious—the benefits of more access to residential green space? Let’s dive in. Green Is Good So what exactly is residential green space? Well, not to state the obvious here but green space is any area that is partly or completely covered with grass, trees, shrubs, or other vegetation. Think of a big, lush backyard with plenty of grass, trees, and flowers. Aside from being aesthetically pleasing, it turns out that green spaces can actually have a significant impact on our cognitive health. According to a large prospective study, increased exposure to residential green space was associated with significantly higher scores on cognitive function measures in middle-aged women. Researchers used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a satellite-based indicator of green vegetation around a residential address, in order to calculate the amount of green space participants had access to. The results were significant—more green space, better cognitive function. It is also important to note that researchers adjusted their results to make sure that they addressed confounding factors like age, race, childhood experiences, and neighborhood socioeconomic status. Even reduced air pollution and increased physical activity, which are often associated with more access to green space, were determined to not be significant factors in this study. Researchers noted that the association to cognitive function might be explained by a reduction in depression. Past studies have also linked increased exposure to green space with reduced risk for schizophrenia, ischemic stroke, and dementia. Get me to some green space right now! The key takeaway? It might seem obvious that more access to green space is good for you, but according to some of this recent research, those benefits may actually be more significant than we previously thought.
