America’s #1 Keto Brand | High quality #ketosnacks and #ketosupplements to help you reach your goals! | Clean, low-carb, sugar-free
Presented By “Nurturing yourself is not selfish – it’s essential to your survival and your well-being.” – Renee Peterson Trudeau The Daily Tonic is a two to five minute read sharing science backed health news and tips, all while getting you to crack a smile or even lol on occasion. Monday. As we get closer to the cold months of the year, a lot of people start craving comfort foods. Mac and cheese, french fries, grilled cheese with some tomato soup… the list goes on but the reason those foods are so comforting isn’t really a good one. Traditional comfort foods are usually high carb, high fat foods that make us feel great in the moment, but usually not so great shortly after and long-term. So what should we actually be eating as we get closer to winter? Maybe foods that will actually boost our immune system? Let’s dive in. Winter Is Coming… Nope—we aren’t talking Game of Thrones. Actual winter time is coming and given the current circumstances we are in, immunity should be top of mind for all of us. It’s also a confusing time, given all the marketing dollars that are being spent by big food to throw immunity claims on foods that aren’t really doing much for you in terms of promoting good health. So let’s get to the bottom of this—if a strong immune system and combating the winter blues is your priority, what should you be eating? First up are foods that are high in B12, such as meat and dairy. I’m talking real meat and dairy, not that Oatly nonsense made with inflammatory canola oil or fake meat burgers made out of… who knows what. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in producing serotonin, which helps regulate mood. Getting enough B12 may also help keep symptoms of fatigue and even depression at bay. B12 is also key for proper red blood cell production and immune function. Next up is everyone’s immunity favorite—vitamin C, found commonly in citrus fruits but also in tomatoes and potatoes (bonus points for rhyming). Vitamin C has clearly been shown to help the immune system function properly. Interestingly enough, this review of 29 studies showed that while Vitamin C may not reduce the incidence of catching a cold among the general population, it did provide a level of protection to participants that were exposed to increased levels of physical exertion, like marathon runners. Can’t forget about foods high in vitamin D, like eggs, fatty fish, liver, and mushrooms. Vitamin D might even be linked specifically to providing some level of protection against Covid-19. Sounds like something to prioritize! And finally, you’ll absolutely want to prioritize foods high in zinc and iron like red meat (again), liver (again) oysters, poultry (pasture-raised of course), crab, lobstahs (Boston accent), and spinach. Zinc has been shown to help the immune system fight off bacteria and viruses. Iron deficiency leads to anemia, which ultimately reduces your ability to fight off infection. The key takeaway? Let’s redefine what we mean by comfort food. There is nothing more comforting than knowing that your immune system is fine-tuned and revving on all cylinders as we head into winter. Eating plenty of high quality meat, dairy, citrus fruits, pasture raised eggs and poultry, fatty fish, liver, oysters, mushrooms and spinach, can equip your body with everything it needs to thrive through these colder months. A little mac and cheese here and there won’t kill you and tomato soup would actually be a great source of vitamin C, but let’s keep the traditional comfort foods to a minimum and prioritize these new immune boosting comfort foods instead. High protein, convenient, and no added sugar. Snacks can be healthy too! Chomps are everything you want in a snack, without any of the stuff you don't. Chomps uses only the highest-quality, sustainably-sourced protein with no added sugar and no harmful ingredients, delivering the most delicious meat snacks to fuel your day. Receive 20% off your first order with code DAILYTONIC! Give Me Chomps! PM Junk Turned AM Junk Apparently morning snacking is a trend and Hershey is looking to capitalize. For a long time, Hershey has been dominant in afternoon and evening sweets. Well, now the maker of Reese's and Kisses is targeting earlier parts of the day as consumers change their eating habits. What does this mean? Less focus on chocolate and candy and more of a focus on chocolate and candy disguised as breakfast bars, snack bars, cereals, and other junk that we’ve been told is an appropriate breakfast or morning snack. Big food will always look for a way to adapt to new consumer trends. It is up to us as educated consumers to sniff it out and realize that candy is candy and treat these products as such. A Reese’s peanut butter cup and the new Reese’s “snack cake” are exactly the same product and both are examples of why we see obesity trends continue in the wrong direction.
